Oh great Synchronicity! I was thinking about a title for this newsletter about cording and emotional attachment when the song “Take these Chains from my Heart” by Hank William came on through spontaneously my I-tunes! So of course I had to use that title!
This week, I want to talk about energetic cording, which is something important that often go unaddressed in therapy. It’s a form of emotional attachment and entanglement that can affect your intuition, your life and your relationships. Unconscious cording can happen with another person, place, animal or issue. When we are corded, we don’t think well. We lose our neutrality which is essential to healthy responding.
Many people teach others to cut psychic cords. I don’t feel good about that practice as it often leaves a dangling cord, which can become reattached. And most importantly psychologically, cutting things off, does not address the root cause of an issue that caused the cording or entanglement in the first place.
What is cording?
Cording is an energy that runs between two people that is dysfunctional. In emotional clearing therapy, it seems like there is an issue that is hard to solve, a situation that seems to “never end” or a relationship that is not working and yet we stay.
In the “unseen realms” It can appear in the mind’s eye as a tiny thread, a rope, chain or other energy. It can be attached to any body part and is often connected to a chakra. If it were to be connected to any of your chakras, it could be connected to any chakra of the other person.
How are they created?
Cording is created when two individuals feel they need each other for some reason. These are often unconscious intentions based on an unmet need or neediness.
You may have probably felt this yourself or known someone who wanted someone to help fill them up in some way: to love us, caress us, support us financially, hold us physically or protect us. They are natural desires of the human. However when these things were unmet in our formative years, it can create an unconscious co-dependence.
When we are in relationship partly based on those unconscious needs, our energy can get entangled or enmeshed. I have seen this in both single people and people who are in relationship.
To properly clear this energy, whether we call it a cord or an issue we must get to the root cause and clear the issue there. We are born with a dependence on our parents and caregivers for everything. In the beginning or life, we can’t provide for our own needs beyond the air we breathe.
As these needs are met by our parents and caregivers, we find ourselves satisfied and those areas of our life grow in health and well-being. When a need is unmet or there is trauma, those needs sometimes go unmet. That creates an unconscious glitch that is trying to fulfill itself. This can lead to relationships that are full of chaos or even one issue in a relationship that just won’t clear and gets triggered over and over again.
Here’s a quiz for you.
- Do you have any conscious or unconscious desire or issue that could create cording?
- Do you have any relationships that have weird reactivity patterns that make no sense?
- Do you have a partnership that’s no longer working?
- Do you have an uncontrollable draw to another person that isn’t logical?
- Do you have trouble speaking your mind to a particular person?
- Do you feel needy around somebody when you feel fine around others?
These are the clues that you might be corded. If not corded, it’s still important to get to the root cause of the issue you are trying to clear. That’s easy enough if you know how and sadly quite hard when you don’t. I spend a great part of my healing time, helping people do that.
