How to Break Free from a Double Bind
For many who have done a lot of deep inner work, the most stubborn issues are the ones that are left. Sometimes the old issue is held in place by a deep left over double bind. Double binds are sometimes recognized in external relationship, where there is a dilemma that we can’t resolve. We feel darned if we do and darned if we don’t.
I am referring here to an internal double bind where we can’t resolve something or let something go internally no matter how hard we try. Being in double bind can feel like we are tangled up like a ball of yarn, where we spin around and around and are unable to resolve an inner conflict.
This can feel emotional and frustrating, drain your energy, affect your health and make it harder to hear your inner voice. The underlying conflict often started in childhood or at another earlier place in life. It may have started during a crisis, a trauma or a non-negotiable situation in a relationship.
When our parts are entangled, we feel conflicted and we wrestle with ourselves. In a therapeutic session, we separate those parts out, find the intention of each part and the core values they are moving from. We clear the trauma that lies at the root of the situation and clear the challenge for each part. Then we renegotiate until the parts are at peace or at ease with each other. Often our parts have the same positive core intention, such as love, safety, protection and loyalty. As we discover that common ground, that can help you clear the issue and and finally feel free and clear.
If you feel two parts of your psyche are conflicted, you can ask each part for it’s deepest most positive intention for you. If you can see where the intentions are the same or very similar, you can often breakthrough.
Personally, i sometimes need help unwinding a double bind. As a therapist, I have been helping people unwind internal double binds for over 30 years.
